How to fix the slow file transfers problem in Vista

When moving from Windows XP to Vista, I noticed that file transfers were much slower. Fortunately, I kept my old operating system too, but that's not a solution - to use Windows XP every time you have to transfer large files from a partition to another. So... how do we fix this issue?

Since the cause of slow file operations in vista is Remote Differential Compression, we have to disable this feature. This is how to do it...

  • Press the Start Orb.
  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Go to the Programs and Programs and features applet.
  • Select Turn on or off Windows features in the left pane.
  • Here, uncheck Remote Differential Compression.
Remote Differential Compression

Now, it's done! File copy and move operations will be much faster.

If disabling Remote

If disabling Remote Differential Compression does not fix the problem, Microsoft just release a pre-service pack update that addresses the problem and it seems to work great!. You can download and install the update at MS site - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

slow vista file ops

OK
Remote differential compression unchecked
Indexing unchecked
Windows defender inactivated
DFS unchecked
All antivirus soft and firewall unactivated

Tried all combinations.

According to all cures I found on the net to apply.
M$ claims they have a fix...provided you call them etc...at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

Unfortunatey still 50 seconds to rename or delete a directory...

Nothing found on microsoft. Better install ubuntu.
