In this tutorial we’ll show you how to set up your connection for a wireless network.

Why use a wireless network?

  • you don't have to worry about running into cable all over the place
  • the chances to get in trouble due to faulty cables is minimized
  • if you want to enjoy an evening in the garden but have to work on a report, you won't have to carry your laptop with a network cable plugged in with you

Connecting to a wireless network automatically

Setting up a wireless network connection in Windows Vista isn't hard at all, especially since your hardware is configured automatically (in most cases), and there are a lot of wizards available to help you during the process. Let’s start

  • Click the Start orb.
  • Now, click Connect to.
  • From the window that opens, choose the network you want to connect to.
  • Click Connect and you’re all set!
If you have trouble with your wireless network, troubleshoot it with Magic Network.

Connecting to a wireless network manually

Sometimes, you may need to set your connection parameters manually, but don't worry, this is not as hard as you may think. Here's how to do it...

  • Open the Connect to a network dialog box, just like we explained above.
  • Once you see that your connection is not in the list, click Set up a connection or network (at the bottom)
  • Choose Manually connect to a wireless network window and fill in the required fields, as follows - Network Name, for the generic name of your connection; Security Type - the method used to authenticate your connection; Encryption Type, Security Key/Passphrase. If you are having trouble filling in this information, contact your internet provider.
  • Next, you can choose to start this connection automatically, or not, by selecting the radio button next to Start this connection automatically.
  • At last, there's a similar option for connecting to a network even when that connection is not broadcasting any data.

Once all the above data is entered, you will see a window telling you that the new connection has been successfully added, and all you have to do is connect to it or change the settings.

Now, that everything is ready, you can move on and discover how to share files, folders and printers and how to protect your network with user accounts.
