Did you erase a file by mistake? You checked Recycle Bin and the file is nowhere to be found? With Handy Recovery you can recover files that were accidently erased from your computer.

When a file is erased, the file system marks the space occupied by that file as free, so when free space is needed, the old data is overwritten. If you erase a file and act quickly using a specialized recovery software, there are big chances that you'll recover the file.

Today's data recovery software is called Handy Recovery, and the version we are testing is 3.0.

Do you really want to hear a bedtime story, or the naked truth? I would go for the last choice, despite the fact that I love stories, because Handy Recovery has a nice interface, well organized and extremely easy to use. All the graphics look very good, and to get to any option of the program you don't need more than three mouse clicks. I think that even my grandmother could learn how to use this program in less than 30 minutes. I could even bet on that!

Once the program is started, all you have to do is press the Analyze button from the toolbar, but first you should select the partition you want to be analyzed. The speed of this process depends on a lot of variables, such as drive fragmentation, amount of free space and others, so I can't say that this program scanned fast or slow. When talking about data recovery, it's not about speed, but about increasing your chances to get your lost data back.

A very nice feature allows you to see an estimate of the chances to recover a certain file, and from my previous experiences with such programs, when you see the "Poor" text next to the file you hope to recover, you should leave all hopes aside. Leave hopes aside, but try, because you never know when you get lucky...

The trial version of the program can recover only one file per day, and it's going to expire after a month, but since its price is only 39.00$, when you get in trouble, Handy Recovery is a really good deal. Anyway... don't hurry, we're not finished here!

Additional features include recovery of files from deleted and formatted partitions, and this one by itself deserves the entire price of the program! Advanced file filtering was also included, as well as the ability to easily browse your hard drive using an Explorer-like file browser that shows existing and deleted files, but deleted files only view mode is also available.

At last, I should tell you about that great feature which allows you to save the status of your scanning/recovery process for getting back to it later, but I am sure you're going to discover that by yourselves...

The Good

Handy Recovery is very easy to use, packed with a lot of powerful features and compatible with FAT, NTFS and EFS file systems.

The Bad

Support for Unix file systems would be a nice addition to the program.

Conclusion

Luck is random, but when you have deleted the wrong files, recovering them involves 99% getting the right tools, and 1% luck. Since I am not a lucky person, I would rather feel secure knowing that I have the right tools by my side, and Handy Recovery is one of the best ones available, if not "the one". Of course, you don't have to believe me, but try it and see for yourselves.
